Kate Da Costa
Kate Da Costa, Senior Associate, leads the team at Sunshine and appears regularly in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court and Werribee Magistrates’ Court.
Vastly experienced in criminal law, Kate has practised exclusively as a criminal defence lawyer since her admission to practice in 2002. She has provided advice and representation to clients in all criminal law jurisdictions in Victoria, as well as the High Court of Australia.
Kate prides herself on providing practical, transparent legal and strategic advice to her clients. The criminal justice system can be confusing and daunting. Kate ensures her clients feel supported and guided throughout the whole process, providing advice on defending charges on pleas of not guilty; or, where a plea of guilty has been entered, preparing the matter to ensure the best possible outcome.
Kate also has extensive experience instructing Counsel, including Queen’s and Senior Counsel, in County Court and Supreme Court Trials and Pleas.
Alex Turner, a graduate of St Bernard’s College in Essendon is a local. After completing a Bachelor of Laws at La Trobe University and a Graduate Diploma at Leo Cussen, he was admitted to practice in August 2016.
Since being admitted he has practiced solely in criminal defence law.
Alex ensures that his clients receive the best representation they possibly can when defending any allegation. He also ensures that if a person has committed a crime, they are only pleading guilty to the appropriate charges. Alex thoroughly explains his clients’ personal circumstances to the Court so they achieve the best possible outcome.
Alex gained experience at Pica Criminal Lawyers as a solicitor advocate, appearing in Court daily and also instructing Counsel in County Court Trials. He maintains having his client’s best interests at heart, continuing to achieve excellent results for his clients at Doogue + George Sunshine.
Jessica appears in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court, Werribee Magistrates’ Court as well as the other Courts across Melbourne.
Admitted to practice in April 2018, Jessica completed a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws at Monash University, graduating with Honours in Law in 2017 and Practical Legal Training at Leo Cussen Centre for Law.
Jessica is a passionate advocate for those accused of wrongdoing, particularly those who come from difficult circumstances. She has spent time at Springvale Monash Legal Service and a highly regarded immigration firm. This allowed her to work with clients from varying cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, helping them navigate the complex legal system. Extensive volunteer experience at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre has also taught her the importance of listening to clients and recounting their stories persuasively and with empathy in order to receive the best possible outcome.
Jessica excelled in Criminal law at university and believes those charged with crimes deserve access to the best legal resources.
